Full Details

ASTRID is a Bluewater cruiser of the highest specification, and a rare expression of Lyle Hess’ Falmouth Cutter 34. Beautifully proportioned, immensely capable and conceived for serious cruising, she was built for a sailor who values seaworthiness, simplicity, craftsmanship and enduring design.

The Falmouth Cutter 34 was among the final cutters designed by Lyle Hess and represented a refinement of ideas he had developed over decades of designing traditional offshore cruising boats. Hess considered the FC34 one of his best designs, and ASTRID carries that pedigree into a yacht built with uncommon care and integrity.

ASTRID‘s fiberglass hull was built by Channel Cutter Yachts. The cabin, decks, and interior were all finished by her original owner, a Master Yacht Joiner who has spared no attention to detail and care during her construction. Over 10,000 hours have gone into her build alone. Launched in 2016, her decks, cabin structures, interior and joinery were professionally constructed using traditional and cold-molded techniques. Material costs alone exceeded $250,000 CAD at the time. From the outset, every decision was guided by the same principles: strength, longevity, function, simplicity, fine materials and understated elegance.

The quality of the construction reveals itself in the details. Silicon bronze fasteners, BS1088 marine plywood, carefully selected hardwoods, resorcinol and epoxy structural adhesives, custom-cast bronze hardware and finely executed joinery are used throughout. Her cold-molded deck combines Western red cedar with a Silverbali wearing surface, while laminated teak bulwarks, teak cabin structures and substantial bronze fastening reflect a standard of construction seldom seen in modern yacht building.

Much of ASTRID’s hardware was custom cast by Port Townsend Foundry and Achinback Foundry. Her hollow round mast and boom were built from carefully selected Sitka spruce sourced from Haida Gwaii, complemented by a solid Douglas fir bowsprit and boomkin and traditional bronze fittings. These are not decorative gestures, but part of a consistent approach to building a yacht intended to be both beautiful and enduring.

An exceptional 6 feet 7 inches of standing headroom at the centerline is complemented by longer berths and settees, generous counter heights and extensive storage. Tankage is located beneath the cabin sole, leaving the lockers, cabinetry and spaces beneath the settees available for cruising gear and provisions.

The saloon is traditional in arrangement but unusually generous in scale, with opposing settees, a pilot berth, bookshelves and a large folding ash dining table with seating for four or more. Honduras mahogany cabinetry and trim, ash surfaces, Douglas fir, yellow cedar and a solid teak cabin sole give the interior warmth and richness without unnecessary ornament.

Forward, the foc’sle incorporates a sitz tub, workbench, hanging locker, clothing and linen storage and the head, with substantial sail and chain storage farther forward.

Aft, the L-shaped galley offers generous working space, with a custom stainless steel counter and integral welded sink, fresh and salt water pumps and a Force 10 two-burner stove. Opposite are the chart area, icebox and Navigator Stove Works Herring diesel heater. A generous double berth, wet locker and additional storage complete the accommodation.

ASTRID’s mechanical and electrical systems follow the same philosophy as the rest of the yacht: robust, accessible and deliberately uncomplicated. Her 36 hp Bukh three-cylinder diesel installation was designed for excellent service access, while the electrical system remains intentionally straightforward, supported by solar charging and quality Blue Sea and Victron components.

What distinguishes ASTRID is not any single feature, but the consistency of the whole. Design, materials, workmanship and systems all reflect the same clear purpose: to create a strong, beautiful and deeply capable cruising yacht without unnecessary complexity.

She will appeal most to a sailor who understands what makes a Lyle Hess design special: graceful proportions, substantial construction, manageable systems, serious offshore capability and the quiet confidence of a boat designed to care for her crew at sea.

ASTRID is truly one of the most remarkable custom yachts we have ever had the honor to represent.

SAILS / RIGGING / SPARS

SAILS:

  • A custom, cream coloured dacron, radial cut mainsail with some roach, battens and three reefs was made up in Port Townsend by Sean Rankins of Northwest Sails and Canvas. Also built were a matching cream dacron furling 100% high clewed jib that is now installed on the furler and a matching staysail with silicone bronze piston hanks. The sails were completed in August 2023.
  • (Sean has 40 years of experience in sail making having worked with Lowell North, and Carol Hasse and his loft has made the sails for Tallyho using the same cream dacron used on ASTRID.)
  • Inger Rankins, a master Canvas worker, built a custom Sunbrella mainsail cover that is the best made sail cover we have ever seen along with a hanging sunbrella bag for the staysail.
  • A three piece Sunbrella total winter boat cover was locally made along with additional covers for the cockpit rails and varnished blocks and a Sunbrella cover for the windlass.

RIGGING:

  • A new forestay and Harken MarkIV furling gear was installed by Blackline. The furling line is lead back by traditional thimbles ending in a bronze sheave near the cockpit winches. The chain Bobstay was replaced by a 1×9 spiced wire with bronze thimbles, custom made in Connecticut by a master rigger. New Lewmar bronze winches were installed for the staysail along with adjacent bronze cleats and of course silicon bronze fasteners. Other winches (all serviced) include: LVJ or Wilmex self-tailing winches and M5 Murray bottom action mast winches. Three new low stretch halyards along with shackles and Flemish eyes were also made up by Blackline. The mast was tuned and all turnbuckles now have bronze welding wire seizing.
  • Four premium Yacht Blocks with Bronze sheaves – one three part, one 2 part, and two singles were obtained from Toplicht in Germany along with silicone bronze cam cleats for the two ended mainsheet set up.
  • Custom silicone bronze mounts for the mainsheet cam cleats were made up and installed on each corner of the Taffrail. The bronze was obtained from Atlas metals in Denver. All fasteners and shackles are bronze.
  • Pete Langley from Port Townsend Foundry made up custom bronze cars and T- track for the staysail and were installed using bronze fasteners and custom made bronze backing plates along with two custom bronze fairleads.
  • Three large silicone bronze cleats on the mast for the halyards and two bronze winches and two bronze cleats on the boom for the reefing lines and a bronze sheave for the third reef.
